About Gigrin Farm
The Gigrin is a family
run upland sheep farm of approximately 200 acres, owned and farmed by
Eithel, Lena, and Chris Powell. Spring is in the air, and the lambs are arriving as planned. In these early stages it's the 'Blue faced Leicesters' who produce their singles, twins, triplets, and even quads! In late March the 'North country mules' will be lambing. This is the really busy time! The purpose built 'sheep
shed' is the maternity ward with its 12 pens each holding around 20
ewes. Having been scanned the sheep are separated into those carrying
single lambs, twins, and triplets. Those carrying singles are fed less
protein and more bulk. This helps prevent their lambs from growing too
large before their birth... The success of this has
encouraged is to further increase our commitments to the wildlife on the
farm. Our latest project is a wetland. Wild ducks, herons, and a
solitary gadwal have already found it to be to their liking. A hide with
disabled access is planned for this area. |
